Consider this: Through-fastened, thin gauge, galvanized, lapped-edge, steel panels on a simple structure with easy access will be at the low end price.
Price will increase according to chosen options or upgrades, and complexity of the installation. Price will be affected by the following:
Steel and Aluminum are the most popular choices here in B.C. The cost of copper or zinc are usually reserved to small features or exceptionally high-end residences. Thickness of metal should also be considered for strength and lifespan.
Prices of metals fluctuate as well, and are only as good as the day you check the markets.
2024 Price per lb. of steel: $0.75 +/-
2024 Price per lb of copper: $4.80 +/-
'Through-fastened' or 'exposed fastener' roof panels are cheaper to produce, and cheaper to install. The profile of the panels provide lapped edges that sit on top of the next panel in line. The panels are laid on the roof deck and screws with waterproof washers are driven through the face of the panel into the substrate. Mechanically seamed / locked panels are installed with hidden fasteners, require more detail work and expertise to install.
Colours and coatings can range in price as well. The most common types of paint are either SMP (silicone-Modified Polyester) and the more expensive and longer lasting PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride)
Some colours are only available as "premium" and are only offered in PVDF.
Custom paint coatings such as sacrificial clear coats for 'anti-graffiti' applications or custom colour mixes can also be applied for an increase in cost.
A square one-sided roof is quick and easy. Each valley, dormer, skylight, and any other architectural feature of your roof adds complication to the installation. Additional flashing work and cut-off waste will increase labour and material cost.
For extreme slopes, and roofs with portions not accessible from a ladder or the main roof deck may require additional equipment and labour for the installers.
Your roof will require more than just the metal panels. There may be membranes, drain mats, sub framing, insulation, and various other products that need to be accounted for in cost. The option or requirement to include these will vary by roof, and these products have their own range in prices so should be discussed before providing an estimate.
